A myriad of cultural, touristic, sports and political events are hosted in the City of Alexandria. As Alexandria witnessed the birth of the first Arab Summit (28-29 May, 1946) to found the Arab League, it was the place to hold a Summit under the name of ANSHAS Conference for Arab Kings and Presidents, in 1946. Conference attendants included kings and presidents of Egypt, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.


Important events and festivals that organized and held in Alexandria throughout the year include:

  • Alexandria Biennale (held every other year);
  • Mediterranean Song Festival (held annually);
  • Festival of Spring Flowers and Ornamental Plants (held annually);
  • International Championship for Powerboats;
  • International Conference on Water Management;
  • National Day of the Governorate of Alexandria;
  • Alexandria Arab Book Fair at the Citadel of Qaitbay;
  • Alexandria International Film Festival (held annually);
  • Hockey International Championship (held annually);
  • Arab Music Festival (held biannually);
  • International Sailing Championship (organized several times and was attended by the King of Denmark);
  • Oil International Conference;
  • International Book Fair (held annually at Bibliotheca Alexandrina);
  • International Summer Festival (held annually);
  • Music Concerts held at the Roman Amphitheatre;
  • Regular Art and cultural Exhibitions Held at the Alexandria Center for Innovation, the Opera House, Sayed Darwish Theatre, the Art Appreciation Center, the Anfoushi Cultural Center and Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
