AL-MESSERI CHAIRING THE NATIONAL POPULATION COUNCIL MEETING

Alexandria Governor, Hani Al-Messeri, chaired the National Population Council meeting attended by the Council’s director, Dr. Iman Ahmed. The issues discussed at the meeting included the progress of the population plan over the last quarter (January-March), and comparison against the corresponding quarter of last year. The meeting was also attended by the former justice minister, Counselor. M. Abdel Aziz Guindy, the Secretary General, Gen. Hussein Ramzy, the Assistant Secretary General, Gen. Hani Abdul Maksoud, district heads and undersecretaries. Al-Messeri mentioned that overpopulation is among the most significant issues encountered in Alexandria, pointing out the need to createpopulation moderation mechanisms and programs. He also emphasized the need to develop awareness plans targeting the people of Alexandria through media, support young people, and create job opportunities through entrepreneurship. The issues discussed at the meeting included recommendations and challenges of the National Population Council, presentation ofthe governorate’s demographic indicators and a status updateon achievements of the annual population plan and health, media, training, literacy, and manpower activities, to concerned population and family planning bodies from (1/1/2015 to 31/3/2015). A progress update was presented at the meeting to demonstrate population growth in Alexandria during the quarter (January-March 2015). At the beginning of the quarter, the population was 4,812,186 inhabitants, whereas at its end, it reached 4,834,005 inhabitants, with an increase of 21819 inhabitants. The National Population Council collaborates with executive officials to develop the governorate’s strategic population plans, and monitor their implementation throughout the year.
